DaCCA III focuses on strengthening climate resilience for poor smallholder farmers as a strategy to alleviate poverty in rural communities of the Lake Victoria Basin; Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya and Busia counties in Kenya, and Magu and Misungwi districts in Tanzania. The programme engages community-based organizations, local duty bearers and CSO-networks to promote community-based climate change adaption priorities in local government development budgets and plans.

The programme pays particular attention to sustainable agricultural practices and increasing food security. This is done by promoting agroecological strategies among rural farmers and local government support staff through hands-on training in smaller groups.

An important component of DaCCA III is capacity building of partner organisations in Kenya and Tanzania. The programme has a strong strategic focus on building the means to measuring the impact of programme activities. This is an important step towards diversifying funding, which will ensure that the partner organisations continue to contribute to mitigating the consequences of climate change.

The expected outcomes of the programme are:

  • Local government authorities integrate community-based climate change adaptation priorities in local policies, plans and budgets and are responsive to the communities;
  • CSOs, community groups and community representative bodies are strengthened to claim and exercise their rights to participation in local planning and budgeting processes;
  • Climate change adaptation capabilities of communities of poor smallholder farmers are strengthened.
